~ Travelling in Egypt today I am once again reminded just how different everything has become
~ Looking through old vintage photographs of this ancient sacred site.. I see women climbing on top of the pyramid in their pretty little day time outfits, people strolling leisurely across the sphinx and zeppelings flying over the giza plateau
~ today .. the pyramids are heavily guarded and on my last visit an entire new fencing structure had been erected that tunnels busload after busload of tourists up the giza plateau
~ it is no longer possible to climb the great pyramid ...although a few hundreds of dollars on "baksheesh" exchanged at the dark of night and a willing guide can get anyone up to the top in the wee morning hours after an exhausting "decoy track" trough the desert sands ..
~ The view from the top is breathtaking and the energy simply ... ah well ... so I have been told ;-)
~ In the 1920's perfectly aligned palmtree avenues sheltered the approach to the plateau with European taking an "exotic" vacation in the comfortable surroundings of the hotel with splendid views of the 3 main pyramids at giza
~ Further along on the river nile one can imagine the sailboats cryising along with ladies and gentlement of 1920's nobility shading themselves from the sun
~ Today it has almost become impossible to photograph the pyramids from the Nile side..as house upon houses block the view as the center of cairo industrializes

Egypt has long held a fascinaion in my heart ..from the first time i set foot on the dusty soil and smelled that searing heat my heart was lost in memory
I have travelled a now 3 times to this ancient land, and i know it wont have been my last time .. when she calls -- there is no denying egypt's ancient voice

Cruising the Nile
~ I have fond memories cryising down the nile, with my art journal in hand trying not to have my watercolor crayons melt on me
~ I learned quickly that india ink and gesso in a jar dont travel well... the cabin pressure in the airplane had opened several lids and spilled its content over my art bag .. luckily I had prepared well and stored my art materials in airtight plastic containers ..so not too much was lost
~ the pressure did not take well to my favourite pen nibs either..the in k had leaked uncontrollably
~ I found that watercolor pencils stood up to the heat best, water was always easily to be found so tahat the watercolor effect was quite useful
~ Lots of paper ephemera and arabic newspaers as well as tourist literature with hieroglyps etc provided plenty of art journal collaging material
~ May of the ancinet buildings in Cairo have wonderful textures ..so a few crayons n tow some wonderful rubbings could be had
~ The metal work is especially detailed lending itself to some fabulous quick sketches .. but the main art tool s the camera to capture the colourful sights of this ancient country
