Egypt Crafts and Art
The Art of the Handblow Glass
~ Egyptian Glass perfume bottles are exclusively hand blown,
~ Often each egyptian glassblower has a particular style that flows into the creation of his perfume bottles and turns each one into beautiful works of art.
~ From the earliest times, in ancient Egyptians the craftsmen have worked with glass to create various jewelry including egyptian glass beads and household decorative objects
Ancient Egypt Art ( click to enlarge)
~ A Gilt Shrinein Thebes, Egypt, showing the Egyptian Pharaoh pouring perfumed liguid into the Queens Hand ~ Perfumed oils were part of many rituals and celebrations in ancient egypt
The Art of Perfume
~ Perfume making was considered an artform in and of itself, that deserved the fines handblown glass bottles the keep these elixiers stored
~Blown glass vessels including egyptian parfume bottles are created using glass rods or pipes a piece of molten glass is stuck onto one end of a blowpipe and blown air is forced through the other end
~ The beautiful egyptian glass bottles often have intricate decorative patterns which come from a variety of glassblowing techniques like pinching the hot glass, adding curved handles , using different coloured glass rods and gold leaf
~Using a number of small glass tools, the glassblower has to constantly rotate the glass at the same time as blowing a constant air pressure through the end of the rod
~Different Style of glass vessel shapes are achieved by varying the pressure of the air
~ Egyptian Artists often specialize in different parts of the creation of handblown egyptian glass bottles ... a different craftsman, may start working on the bottle after the blower is finished .. he may be specializing in engraving skills, gold leafing or delicate pattern cutting
~What strikes us first is often the beautiful coloring of the egyptian perfume bottle, some colors are applied with pigments in the glass and some of the delicate floral designs and flourishes are handpainted by another artisan who specializes in tht skill
~ the most expensive egyptian perfume bottles will have real 12 carat liguid gold applied to some of the surface desing of the vessels, cheaper versions will feature gold paint suitable for glass apllications
~ Today each family of egyptian glass blowers has their own special techniques that are handed down from generation to generation, in most cases from father to son.
