The Art of Letter Writing

~The Victorian Era saw letterwriting as an art form in and of itself )from 1837 - 1901 the period of the reign of Queen Victoria).

~Victorian letter writing Etiquette contained many do's and don'ts as to the proper art of letter writing

~For men, plain paper was suggested and for women a light spritz of scented perfume or using scented ink was sometimes acceptable

~ ribbons, flowery drawings, and interesting colors could be used by women

~ monogrammed letterheads where fashionalble in the victorian era by the end of the nineteenth century

~ It was common to write letters of apology, letters of congratulations gain access into high society with letters of introduction, exchange proper letters of love and letters of business

~ sealing and envelope started by using wax wafers and dried gum, but as time went on colored wax became the fashion

~ Particular care was taken as to Hand-writing styles and it was considered unacceptable to have Blotches, scratched out words, and other signs of haste . these were thought by the victorians to be a lack of care and were frowned upon.



A Recipe for Scented Ink


Ingredients for Scented Ink

~ 100 drops of essential oil
~ a teaspoon of vodka
~ 2 ounces of letter writing ink

~ blend the essential oil with the vodka
~ take a dropper and some writing ink
add a little bit of the scented ink mixture with the dropper bottle to the ink and blend well
~ dark colour inks work better
~ 100 drops of oil added to about 2 ounces of ink

~ choosing a letter writing scent
personal preference of a touch of lavender or a hint of rose ... and i love in winter to use cinnamon scent in brown ink to add a festive touch to christmas letters

~ If you find the fragrance of the scented ink isn't strong enough try taking a spritzer bootle and filling it wih a mixture of water and sme added essential oil scents ..to lightly spray the writing paper and your envelope with a fragrance to recipient might enjoy

~ Make some time to read about the properties of herbs and meaning of flower essenced to choose the right scent for your writing paper

Letter Writing

Write to me a letter
etched by Sunday morning
sunlight,
centered in a room where
returning robins sing
of the sea-swung
palms and beaches of
Florida.

Your chosen words
will glint beyond
their stony use and point
to the history we sense in night, that lore
drunk on nocturnal
breezes (the polyphony of sleep)
when cricket chords mesmerize
wall shadows stretched
tight from your feet
until they forget to be faithful to your body.


When your letter arrives,
I will memorize your words, rendering
your syntax so finely all will be forgotten except
your dancing beyond the ink-stains,
a game of pretend really,
as if you were always
in this room.
