Did you know:  a Little Illumination History

In the olden days there were 3 people involved in the art of illumination. Creating illuminated letters and illuminated anuscripts involved the parchmenter, the scribe and the illuminator. The parchmenter was in charge of preparing the writing surface, both for the writing and the illuminating drawing part. The scribe was in charge of correctly copying all the information onto the parchment or vellum. the illuminator was the artist who created the ornamental flourishes and lettering decorations on illuminated manuscripts. In the medieval days most of these tasks were done by monks in monasteries who were especially trained in the art of illumination.

  • The Parchmenter prepared animal skins . Different kinds of animal skins were available to become twriting surfaces. Parchment referred to a writing surface made from sheepskin and Vellum referred to calfskin. To prepare the surface the animal skins were stretched out in the sun to dry , then burnished to create a soft surface to write and illuminate upon .
  • The Scribe was in charge of correctly copying the words that had been prepared. First he would check for spelling mistakes, then he would use writing quills made from different types of bird feathers as well as handmade inks from plant pigments, mineral pigments and egg white binders.
  • The Illuminator was in charge of adding decorative symbols and ornamental flourishes to the text. These are called Illuminations. With the text in place he would first sketch in the ornamental flourishes and placement of symbols before adding the gold leaf designs. After the gold leaf illuminations had dried he would paint the colours on , using handmade pigments depending on the type of colour required.

All three people involved in creating illuminated manuscripts were skilled artists and calligraphers practiced in the art of illuminated lettering. Reading in those days was reserved to a select few, especially royalty and religious educated people, so illumination was a sacred and well thought of artform.

I am intriqued by the notion of universal consciousness and choose to peek closely at the small particles that make up existence.

Human and living form cell biology, the interplay of microcosm and macrocosm, quantumphysics and the spiritual connection to the Self all nurture me with an endless stream of inspiration.

The female form and its nature of being, the beauty of motherhood, viewing the world in fragments rather than wholes and the palpable energy exchange and communication between them are central themes in my artwork.

I enjoy making the invisible visible and creating openended visual artworks that invite the viewer to explore deeper within their own layers of perception.

Contemporary Mixed media art techniques provide a rich playground for my artistic impulses and allow room for an individual approach to the multilayered facets of my artwork.
