~ What is a Lighthouse ?

~ A lighthouse is a tower,
building, or framework designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses


~In the olden days the light from a lighthouse was created by a fire and used as an aid to navigation and to pilots at sea.

~ Today lighthouses are used to mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals and reefs


~ Lighthouse are situated so that the illuminate safe passages and entry ways to harbors


~ Othen lighhouses are also used for aerial navigation by planes, helicopters and other flying aircraft


~ In todays days the maintanace costs for lighthouses often prohibit extensive use . The replacement by modern electronic navigational aids also makes lighthouses a nostalgic reminder from our past coastal history

Women Lighthouse keepers

~ "One of the first non-clerical U.S. government jobs that were open to women were positions as lighthouse keepers, although others did serve in staff positions at the various district and headquarter offices.

~ Typically those appointed as keepers were actually the spouse of the assistant or head keeper; they assumed these professional duties to assist their spouse or took over when their husbands became ill and/or died.

~ Nevertheless, many of these intrepid widows, and women appointed in their own right, served their country for many years with distinction in a time when employment for women was extremely limited. They were true trailblazers."
